# Reporting intents and playbooks

Use this page to pick the right report for your data, and to change how Reporter works for your company if the defaults don't fit.

- **Intent**: what you want Reporter to produce.
- **Source**: where the data comes from.
- **Playbook**: your company's custom instructions for Reporter. In the app, these are called **Reporting Profiles**.

You don't need a profile to get started. The standard intents work without one.

## Intents and their sources

Reporter only offers what fits your company type and your sources.

| Intent | What it produces | Sources |
| -------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Single Statement** | One financial statement | Upload, email, QuickBooks, NetSuite |
| **Financing Package** | Core financial statements and lender-ready documents, in one collection | Upload, email, QuickBooks, NetSuite |
| **Mini 10-K** | A compact annual reporting package | Upload, email, QuickBooks, NetSuite |
| **Statement of Financial Condition Summary** | Company information, core financial statements, selected schedules and a summary | QuickBooks, NetSuite |
| **Periodic Performance Review** | A board-prep review of one period. See [Scheduled reviews](/founders/scheduled-reviews/) | NetSuite |
| **Investment Statement** | An investment report and dashboard snapshot from a brokerage or custodian statement | Upload, email, Fidelity, Interactive Brokers, Charles Schwab |

## Connect a source

Go to **Publish** > **Sources**.

- **Accounting:** connect QuickBooks or NetSuite.
- **Email:** create an inbox, a dedicated address that receives statements and supporting documents for this company.
- **Upload:** nothing to set up. Add files when you start a report.

For a monthly routine using brokerage statements, see [Reporting examples](/founders/reporting-examples/).

## Report as yourself

You can report as a person as well as a company, for investment statements only. The other intents are for companies.

1. In your personal context, go to **Publish** > **Reporting Profiles**.
2. Choose **Set up reporting profile**. This creates your personal reporting record and opens a new profile.
3. Choose a source. People can use direct upload or email; accounting connections are for companies.

## Create a reporting profile

A profile tells Reporter which source to use and which report to produce. Create one when the same report needs the same setup each time.

1. **Start the profile**

Go to **Publish** > **Reporting Profiles** and choose **New Profile**.
2. **Describe it**

Enter the **Name**, **Category** and **Description**. Category only
organizes your profiles; it doesn't change how they run. Choose **Save and
   Choose Strategy**.
3. **Choose and configure a strategy**

The strategy is the report the profile runs. It sets which source document
   and settings are needed.
4. **Attach Golden Documents**

   Optional. See [Use Golden Documents](#use-golden-documents).
5. **Activate it**

Choose **Save Draft** to keep working, or **Activate in Reporter** to make
   it available.

If you see **Custom profile activation is locked on this workspace**, you can still use the standard intent by choosing **Use Default Intent in Reporter**.

## Customize how Reporter writes for you

Open a profile to add guidance for your company:

- **Enabled reporting intents**: which intents appear in Reporter for this company.
- **Custom analysis instructions**: for example, "Focus on working capital, cash runway and covenant risk."
- **Reporting audience framing**: for example, "Write for a board audience, not a tax preparer."
- **Special accounting treatment notes**: for example, "Explain unusual related-party items."
- **Optional source overrides**: guidance for one source only, with its own **Output emphasis** and **Required schedules**.

Leave these blank unless your company needs something different. Each save creates a new draft version, and a draft isn't live until you choose **Publish Selected Draft**.

> **Caution**
>
> Instructions change how Reporter frames its analysis. They shouldn't be used
> to change the numbers, override source records or hide missing data.

## Use Golden Documents

Golden Documents are approved examples of the output you trust, such as a lender-ready package or a board-approved report. They help Reporter follow a known format, calculation approach or review standard.

They guide the shape of the report. They don't replace your source data.

- A Golden Document must be approved, redacted, a generated sample, or synthetic. Raw private or pending documents can't be used.
- Use references that match the same audience and purpose, and are current for the period.
- Keep the set small. Unrelated references make a report harder to review and less predictable.
