# Publish reports

Use Reporter to turn your books or statements into a report you can publish and share. You review everything before it goes anywhere.

## Create a report

1. **Start the report**

From **Review**, choose **Start a report**. You can also go to **Publish** >
**Create** and choose **File a Report**. Check that the company name is the
one you mean to report for.
2. **Select intent**

Under **What would you like to report?**, choose a report. Then choose
**Where does the statement come from?** and select **Continue to upload**.
See [Reporting intents and playbooks](/founders/reporting-intents/) for the
   options.
3. **Upload statement**

Upload your file, or for a connected ledger, choose the dates to pull. If no
connection exists, this step offers **Connect QuickBooks** or **Connect
   NetSuite**.
4. **Review data**

Check the extracted figures against your source. Resolve anything missing or
   mismatched here.
5. **Preview**

Check the report exactly as it will be published.
6. **Publish**

Publish the report. Leave **Create verification record** on to lock the
report, record its fingerprint and create a record that can be checked on
chain before you share. See [How proof works](/trust/how-proof-works/).
7. **Share**

Notify people who already follow you, or invite someone by email. Sharing is
a separate step and can be revoked. See [Share reports](/founders/sharing/).

Keep the page's URL so you can return to the same run if you close it. Reopen the run rather than uploading the file again.

> **Note**
>
> The verification record shows which version was published and when. It doesn't
> show that the figures are correct. They are still your figures, from your
> sources.

## What to check before you publish

- The company and the reporting period.
- Figures against the source statement, including anything Reporter flagged as missing.
- Whether the report describes what you'll say it describes. A single account statement isn't a whole fund's performance.
- Whether the original document should be available to readers. See [Protect the document](/founders/sharing/#protect-the-document).

## After you publish

A report locked on chain can't be changed: its name, type and period are fixed, and you can't delete it. Make corrections in a new report and say that it's a correction.

To remove a report that hasn't been locked, delete it. If anyone else has had it, it's withdrawn rather than erased. See [Withdraw a report](/founders/sharing/#withdraw-a-report).

## Post updates and documents

Not everything needs the financial reporting workflow. Go to **Publish** > **Create** to:

- **Post an Update**: a monthly investor update, progress note or announcement.
- **Share a Document**: an investor letter, investment memo, thesis or board document.

These appear under **Publish** > **Publications**. You can share them, tag them and add them to collections.

## Organize reports into collections

A collection is a named set of reports and publications that you share as one unit, such as a board pack or a lender pack. Go to **Publish** > **Collections**, or the **Collections** tab on the **Reports** page.

- **Add one report.** On the **Reports** page, open a report's menu and choose **Add to collection…**.
- **Add several.** Choose **Select**, tick the reports, then choose **Add to collection**.
- **Start from a structure.** When you create a collection, the **Data Room** template sets up Financials (with Statements and Projections), Cap Table, Legal, Corporate and Team.
- **Nest collections.** On a collection's page, choose **New collection inside**. Use **Move to…** to move one elsewhere, or to **Top level**.

Keep these rules in mind:

- Anyone who can see a collection can see everything inside it, including anything you add later.
- A minted collection is fixed: you can't add or remove anything in it.
- A collection that still holds other collections can't be deleted. Move or delete those first.

To ask questions across a collection, choose **Ask about this collection**. Answers come from the collection's reports and cite the ones used. Reports you can't read are left out.
